What "from-price" actually means
Headline "from £60" prices usually cover a single area, basic sonographer-led scan with a written report. Add-ons that push the price up include consultant radiologist reporting, multi-area scans, ultrasound-guided procedures (steroid injections, biopsies), and same-day urgent appointments. Always confirm whether the report and images are included before booking.

Private breast ultrasound in London
Breast ultrasound is one of the most-searched private diagnostic services in London, often booked because of a lump, pain, or family history that's prompting a faster look than the NHS pathway can offer. Single-sided scans typically run £175–£350; bilateral scans with axilla (lymph node) assessment £250–£450.
For breast work specifically, the consultant-led clinics — particularly Harley Street Ultrasound Group — have on-site oncoplastic breast surgeons and same-day follow-up if anything is found. That triple pathway (sonographer → radiologist report → breast surgeon if needed) is what most NHS breast clinics deliver in stages over weeks.
What's typically included in a breast ultrasound
Standard breast ultrasound includes physical examination, bilateral breast and axilla scan, and a written report. Same-day breast surgeon consultation is sometimes included, sometimes a paid add-on. Mammography is a separate scan (different technology) — usually recommended alongside ultrasound for women over 40.
Pelvic & women's health ultrasound
Pelvic ultrasound covers a broad range of women's health concerns: pelvic pain, abnormal bleeding, suspected fibroids, ovarian cysts, endometriosis, fertility planning, and PCOS. Most clinics offer both transabdominal pelvic (full bladder, external) and transvaginal pelvic (more detailed internal view) on the same visit if needed.
- Pelvic ultrasound: £120–£280
- Transvaginal: £150–£320
- Combined transabdominal + transvaginal: £180–£380
- Follicular tracking (fertility): £120–£250 per scan, often booked as a series
- 3D pelvic ultrasound: £250–£450 (advanced uterine assessment)
- Endometrial assessment: £150–£280
- Ovarian assessment / cyst monitoring: £130–£260
- Postpartum scan: £150–£280
For ongoing fertility monitoring, follicular tracking scans across an IVF or ovulation cycle add up quickly — this is one area where insurance with strong outpatient cover can pay off if the policy includes fertility investigations.
Abdominal, liver & gallbladder ultrasound
Abdominal ultrasound is the most-booked diagnostic scan after pregnancy work — usually for unexplained pain, suspected gallstones, liver concerns (including liver elastography for fatty liver / NAFLD assessment), kidney stones, or to investigate raised liver enzymes flagged on a blood test. A standard abdominal scan covers the liver, gallbladder, pancreas, spleen and kidneys in one visit. Gallbladder-focused scans look specifically for stones, polyps and wall thickness; liver-focused scans add elastography to assess fibrosis or fatty change.
- Standard abdominal: £99–£260 (covers liver, gallbladder, pancreas, spleen, kidneys)
- Liver-focused / elastography: £120–£290
- Combined abdominal + pelvic: £180–£380
- Combined abdominal + urinary tract (KUB): £180–£350
- Targeted appendicitis assessment: £150–£280
- Renal / kidney-focused: £99–£240
- Hernia / groin scan: £120–£260
Preparation matters
Abdominal scans typically need 6 hours of fasting beforehand for clear gallbladder views. Pelvic transabdominal scans need a full bladder (usually 1 litre of water 1 hour before). Most clinics email instructions with your booking confirmation — but worth confirming when you book.
Men's health ultrasound (testicular, prostate & scrotum)
Men's health ultrasound is one of the fastest-growing self-pay categories in London. Most men book privately to avoid the awkwardness of an NHS GP referral, or because of long NHS waits for non-urgent urology appointments. Self-referral is widely accepted.
- Testicular / scrotal ultrasound: £120–£240 — for lumps, pain, swelling, suspected varicocele, hydrocele or epididymal cysts
- Prostate ultrasound (transabdominal): £150–£280 — assesses prostate size, bladder emptying, post-void residual
- Renal & bladder (KUB): £130–£260 — for blood in urine, suspected stones, recurrent infections
- Penile / vascular doppler: £200–£400 — erectile dysfunction vascular assessment
- Hernia (inguinal): £120–£260 — suspected groin hernia
For testicular scans, most London clinics offer same- or next-day appointments. Sonoworld, London Sono, The Scan Clinic, IUS and Spital Clinic all run regular men's health slots. For prostate-focused work or BPH assessment, a private GP or urology consultation is often a better starting point than self-referring straight to ultrasound — the GP can also arrange PSA testing alongside.
Note on transrectal prostate scans
Standard transabdominal prostate ultrasound is widely available privately, but transrectal ultrasound (TRUS) — usually combined with biopsy — is generally only done in a specialist urology setting, not at standalone diagnostic clinics. If your scan is part of a prostate cancer workup, you'll likely be referred to a urologist at one of the major hospitals (Wellington, Cromwell, The London Clinic).
Neck & thyroid ultrasound
Neck ultrasound is most commonly booked for thyroid nodules, suspected goitre, swollen lymph nodes, or to investigate parotid and submandibular gland swellings. It can distinguish solid masses from fluid-filled cysts and is the first-line imaging for thyroid lumps before biopsy.
- Thyroid ultrasound: £120–£260
- Full neck (thyroid + lymph nodes): £150–£320
- Parotid / submandibular focus: £140–£280
- Thyroid nodule biopsy (FNA): £400–£800 (procedure plus scan)
If a nodule is found that needs biopsy, most consultant-led clinics (Harley Street Ultrasound, London Sono) can do the FNA biopsy in the same visit or schedule it for the following days. Reports are typically sent to your NHS GP or endocrinologist on request.
Musculoskeletal & sports injury ultrasound
MSK ultrasound is increasingly the go-to for soft-tissue injuries — particularly tendons, ligaments, bursae, and joint capsules. Unlike MRI, it shows real-time movement, which makes it especially good for shoulder rotator cuff, knee patellar tendons, Achilles, plantar fascia, and elbow tendinopathy. Many clinics also offer ultrasound-guided steroid or hyaluronic acid injections as a follow-on procedure.
Body areas commonly scanned
- Shoulder — rotator cuff tears, impingement, bursitis, AC joint
- Knee — patellar tendon (jumper's knee), Baker's cyst, MCL/LCL ligaments, meniscal cysts
- Hip / groin — tendinopathy, hernia, snapping hip syndrome
- Achilles — tendinopathy, partial tears, Haglund's deformity, plantar fascia
- Ankle — ligament sprains, peroneal tendons, sinus tarsi
- Elbow — tennis elbow, golfer's elbow, distal biceps tendon
- Wrist / hand — carpal tunnel, ganglion cysts, trigger finger
- Forearm — tendinopathy, soft-tissue lumps
Pricing
- Single joint MSK: £140–£320
- Bilateral / multi-joint: £220–£480
- Ultrasound-guided steroid injection: £250–£500 (procedure + scan)
- Sports injury focused (with consultant): £300–£550
For sports injuries, consultant-led clinics with subspecialty MSK radiologists (Harley Street Ultrasound Group, London Sono) are typically faster to spot subtle tendon partial tears that less specialised sonographers miss.
Pregnancy ultrasound in London
Private pregnancy scans complement the NHS dating and 20-week anomaly scans rather than replacing them. Common reasons to book privately: early reassurance after a previous miscarriage, gender confirmation outside NHS protocols, growth concerns, bonding 4D scans, or NHS waits that fall outside ideal timing windows.
- Early pregnancy / viability (6–10 weeks): £99–£180
- Dating scan: £120–£200
- Gender / well-being scan: £120–£220
- Anomaly scan (20 weeks): £200–£350
- Growth & presentation: £150–£280
- 4D bonding / keepsake: £140–£250
- Harmony / NIPT (with scan): £350–£500+ (test plus blood)
Important to know
Private "reassurance" scans are not a substitute for the NHS anomaly scan at 20 weeks, which is performed to a specific clinical protocol. Many private clinics run their own protocol-compliant anomaly scans — but verify this if you're considering using a private scan instead of NHS.
Vascular, doppler & AAA screening
Doppler ultrasound assesses blood flow rather than just structure. Common reasons to book: suspected DVT (deep vein thrombosis) in the leg, varicose vein assessment, carotid artery checks for stroke risk, abdominal aorta screening (AAA), and erectile dysfunction vascular workup.
- DVT scan (one leg): £180–£350
- Carotid doppler: £180–£350
- Abdominal aorta (AAA) screening: £150–£280
- Varicose vein mapping: £200–£400
- Arterial doppler (lower limb): £200–£380
For suspected DVT, most clinics will see you the same day — this is one ultrasound type where speed genuinely matters clinically. The NHS offers free AAA screening to men in the year they turn 65, but private screening is often booked by women, men outside that age band, or those wanting a faster appointment.
Private paediatric ultrasound
Several London clinics offer paediatric ultrasound — either as a full subspecialty (Paediatric Diagnostics) or alongside adult work with paediatric-trained consultants (Harley Street Ultrasound, Spital Clinic, St John & Elizabeth Hospital). Ultrasound is particularly suited to children because it's radiation-free and well tolerated even by newborns.
Common reasons to book
- Abdominal pain in children — assesses liver, gallbladder, kidneys, bladder; can spot constipation patterns and urinary tract issues
- Neck lumps — distinguishes solid masses from fluid-filled cysts and swollen lymph nodes
- MSK / sports injuries — joints, tendons, hip dysplasia screening
- Newborn hip screening — typically 4–6 weeks of age, looking for developmental dysplasia
- Soft tissue lumps — reassurance scans for parents
- Urinary symptoms — recurrent UTIs, bladder emptying assessment
Pricing & practicalities
- Spital Clinic paediatric: £190 with consultant-led reporting
- Harley Street Ultrasound paediatric: from around £200 single area, additional area typically +£145
- Most paediatric scans: £190–£280
What to know before bringing your child
Abdominal scans need 6–8 hours of fasting (shorter for infants). Pelvic / bladder scans need a full bladder. A chaperone consent form usually has to be signed before the scan can proceed. Bring a favourite toy or comfort item, and dress your child in comfortable, loose-fitting clothing for easy access to the area being examined.
Full-body & health screening ultrasound
Several London clinics offer comprehensive ultrasound screening packages — sometimes called "health MOTs" or "full-body scans". These cover multiple organ systems in one visit and are often combined with blood tests, blood pressure, and consultation. Useful for symptom-free preventive screening, family history concerns, or as part of an annual health check.
- Full abdomen + pelvis combined: £200–£400
- Multi-organ ultrasound screen: £350–£600
- Full-body health package (scan + bloods + consultation): £450–£1,200+
- Cardiovascular package (carotid + AAA + echo): £400–£800
- Women's wellness (pelvic + breast + thyroid): £400–£700
- Men's wellness (testicular + prostate + abdomen): £350–£650
London Sono, Sonoworld, and Vista Health all offer themed wellness packages. The major hospitals (Wellington, Cromwell, The London Clinic) offer more comprehensive executive health screens that combine ultrasound with MRI, CT, ECG, and consultation.
Be cautious about "full-body" marketing
Asymptomatic ultrasound screening has limited evidence behind it for some applications — for example, the UK National Screening Committee doesn't recommend whole-body ultrasound screening for healthy adults. False positives (incidentalomas) can lead to unnecessary follow-up investigations. If you're booking a full-body screen, talk to your GP first about which elements are likely to be useful for your specific risk profile.
What actually happens at a private ultrasound appointment
If this is your first private scan, here's what to expect from the moment you arrive to when you leave with your results.
Check-in (5 mins)
Photo ID, payment, complete a short medical questionnaire. If using insurance, your authorisation code is captured here.
Pre-scan chat (5–10 mins)
The sonographer or radiologist takes a brief history, asks about symptoms, and explains what they'll be looking at and why.
The scan itself (15–45 mins)
You lie on the examination table. Warm gel is applied to the area. The sonographer moves the probe across your skin. Painless, no radiation.
Verbal results
Most clinics give you preliminary findings before you leave. You can ask questions. If anything urgent is found, they'll explain next steps now.
Written report (2–24 hrs)
A formal radiology report arrives by secure email or patient portal. Some clinics also include scan images.
Onward action (your call)
If everything's clear, you're done. If not, the report can go to your NHS GP or a private specialist for follow-up.
When to skip private and go straight to A&E or 111
Private ultrasound is excellent for non-urgent investigation, but some symptoms need emergency assessment immediately — not a private scan booking next week. Don't delay urgent care to wait for a private appointment.
Go to A&E or call 999 immediately if you have
- Severe sudden abdominal pain, especially with vomiting, fever, or blood in stool
- Sudden severe testicular pain (suspected torsion — surgical emergency, hours matter)
- Severe one-sided leg swelling with chest pain or shortness of breath (possible PE)
- Heavy vaginal bleeding in pregnancy with severe pain (suspected ectopic pregnancy)
- Sudden severe headache with neck stiffness or visual changes
- Sudden weakness, slurred speech, or facial droop (suspected stroke)
- Severe chest pain or pressure
Call NHS 111 or your GP if you have
- One-sided calf swelling and tenderness without chest symptoms (possible DVT — needs same-day scan)
- New testicular lump or persistent swelling without severe pain
- Persistent unexplained abdominal pain over several days
- Pregnancy bleeding without severe pain (early viability scan needed soon)
- Sudden onset jaundice (yellowing of skin/eyes)
For all of the above, NHS pathways exist that move faster than booking a private scan: 111 can get you to a same-day GP, and A&E will scan urgently if clinically indicated. Private ultrasound is best when symptoms are persistent but not acutely worsening.
How self-referral actually works
Most London ultrasound clinics — including IUS, Sonoworld, The Scan Clinic, London Sono, Harley Street Ultrasound, Vista Health and Spital Clinic — accept self-referral. That means you don't need a GP letter to book. The process is straightforward:
- Choose your scan: Pick directly from the clinic's price list, or use their booking advisors if you're unsure which scan matches your symptoms.
- Book online or by phone: Most clinics offer same- or next-day slots. Some have evening and weekend availability.
- Prep instructions: Sent by email when you book — usually fasting (abdominal) or full bladder (pelvic).
- The scan: 15–45 minutes. Sonographer or radiologist explains as they go.
- Verbal results: Usually given on the day before you leave.
- Written report: Digital report within 2–24 hours, sometimes longer for consultant-reported scans.
- Onward steps: If anything needs follow-up, you can take the report to your NHS GP or arrange a private specialist consultation.

Booking checklist: what to ask & what to bring
Ask the clinic before booking
- Is the price quoted fully inclusive (scan, report, images)?
- Will my report be written by a Consultant Radiologist or a sonographer?
- How long until I receive the written report?
- Can the report be sent directly to my NHS GP or private specialist?
- What preparation do I need (fasting / full bladder / nothing)?
- If the scan finds something, what's the next step at this clinic?
- Do you bill insurers directly, or do I pay and reclaim?
- Is there parking or step-free access if I need it?
What to bring on the day
- Photo ID (driving licence or passport)
- Proof of address if requested
- Insurance authorisation code (if using insurance)
- Any previous scan reports or letters relevant to your symptoms
- List of current medications
- Loose-fitting clothing for easy access to the scan area
- Payment method (card, most don't take cash for larger amounts)
Using health insurance for ultrasound in London
Most UK private medical insurance policies cover diagnostic ultrasound as part of standard outpatient care — but the way they handle it varies significantly between insurers and policy tiers.
| Insurer | Typical ultrasound handling |
|---|---|
| Bupa | Covered under outpatient diagnostics. Often goes through Bupa-recognised clinics or Bupa Cromwell. Pre-authorisation required. |
| AXA Health | Standard or full outpatient cover handles ultrasound. Direct settlement at most major London clinics. |
| Aviva | Covered subject to your hospital list (Expert Select, Key, Extended). Some London clinics need Extended. |
| Vitality | Covered under outpatient. Direct scan booking through their app for some scan types. |
| WPA | Covered under standard policies — check your outpatient limit. |
| The Exeter | Covered with strong outpatient cover; smaller insurer-friendly clinic network. |
✅ Insurance covers ultrasound when:
- You have a GP or specialist referral letter
- Pre-authorisation has been issued before booking
- The clinic is on your insurer's recognised list
- The scan investigates a covered eligible condition
- You haven't hit your annual outpatient limit
❌ Insurance typically won't cover:
- Self-referred reassurance scans (no GP letter)
- Pregnancy / obstetric scans (need maternity cover)
- Pre-existing conditions excluded by policy
- Scans at non-recognised clinics
- Scans after you've hit your outpatient limit
