If you have Vitality health insurance and want to use a Spire or Nuffield Health hospital, here's exactly what your plan covers, which hospital list tier you need, and what happens if your preferred hospital isn't included. Independent guide — not affiliated with Vitality, Spire or Nuffield Health.

Quick answers
🏥

Does Vitality cover Spire hospitals?

Yes — on Countrywide and London lists. Local list may exclude some major Spire sites.

Yes — most Nuffield hospitals on Countrywide and London lists. Always confirm your specific site.

Quick summary

Vitality covers most Spire and Nuffield Health hospitals under its Countrywide and London Care hospital lists. The cheaper Local list may exclude major Spire and Nuffield sites in large cities. If you use a hospital not on your plan, you pay the difference as a shortfall. Always confirm your specific hospital is covered using Vitality's hospital search tool or by calling Vitality directly before booking any treatment. This is an independent guide — not affiliated with Vitality, Spire Healthcare or Nuffield Health.

How Vitality's network works

Vitality hospital list tiers explained

Vitality divides its hospital network into tiers. The tier you have determines which hospitals are covered under your policy — and whether Spire and Nuffield hospitals in your area are included.

Tier 1

Local List

  • Lowest premium option
  • Regional and partner hospitals only
  • Major Spire and Nuffield sites in big cities often excluded
  • Best for: budget-focused buyers outside major cities
  • Risk: your preferred local hospital may not be included
Tier 2

Countrywide List

  • Includes nearly all Spire hospitals nationwide
  • Includes most Nuffield Health hospitals
  • Excludes some central London premium sites
  • Best for: most people outside central London
  • Good balance of access and cost
Tier 3

London Care List

  • All Countrywide hospitals included
  • Adds central London hospitals (HCA, Wellington etc.)
  • Includes London Nuffield and Spire sites
  • Best for: London-based members or those needing London access
  • Higher premium than Countrywide
⚠️

Always check before booking

Hospital list contents change. A hospital that was included last year may have moved tier or been removed. Always verify your specific hospital is on your current plan using Vitality's online hospital list search or by calling Vitality Member Services before booking any appointment or treatment.

Before you book

How to check if your hospital is covered

Don't assume your hospital is covered — always verify before booking. Here's the fastest way to confirm.

1

Find your current hospital list tier

Check your policy documents or Vitality member portal. Look for whether your plan states Local, Countrywide or London Care. If unsure, call Vitality Member Services.

2

Use Vitality's hospital search tool

Visit the Vitality website and use the hospital list search. Enter your postcode and your hospital name (e.g. “Spire Leeds Hospital” or “Nuffield Health Birmingham”). This will confirm whether it's on your specific plan.

3

Call Vitality to pre-authorise

Even if the hospital appears on your list, you must get pre-authorisation from Vitality before booking any specialist appointment or treatment. Do not book without the authorisation code. See: pre-authorisation codes explained.

4

Confirm the consultant is recognised

Not only does the hospital need to be on your list — the consultant you see must also be recognised by Vitality. Ask the hospital secretary to confirm billing arrangements before your appointment to avoid shortfalls.

Out-of-network costs

What happens if your hospital isn't covered?

🚫

You pay the shortfall — which can be significant

If you use a Spire or Nuffield hospital that isn't on your Vitality hospital list, Vitality will still process your claim — but you pay the shortfall between what your hospital charges and what Vitality will pay. This can range from a few hundred pounds to over £1,000 per admission depending on the procedure.

Example: A Vitality Local list member uses Nuffield Health Guildford for knee surgery. The total bill is £6,800. Vitality covers £6,000 based on their recognised fee schedule. The member pays £800 as a shortfall — on top of their excess.

⚠️

How to avoid shortfalls

Always confirm your hospital is on your list before booking. If it's not, ask Vitality whether an alternative in-network hospital nearby covers the same procedure. See: Vitality hospital list explained in full.

Getting better access

Upgrading your Vitality hospital list to include Spire & Nuffield

If your preferred Spire or Nuffield hospital isn't on your current plan, you may be able to upgrade your hospital list tier.

1

Contact Vitality Member Services

Call or use the member portal to request a hospital list upgrade. Upgrades are most straightforward at renewal but may be possible mid-term in some circumstances.

2

Confirm the premium difference

Upgrading from Local to Countrywide or Countrywide to London Care typically adds 10–20% to your annual premium. Ask for an exact quote before committing.

3

Check any waiting period implications

Upgrading your hospital list may affect any ongoing or pending claims. Always confirm with Vitality whether your current treatment pathway is affected by the upgrade.

💡

Compare before upgrading

Before paying more for a Vitality upgrade, it's worth checking whether another insurer offers the hospital access you need at a similar or lower premium. Bupa and Aviva both cover most Spire and Nuffield hospitals. See: Vitality vs Bupa · Vitality vs Aviva.
