Quick Answer

Stourside Hospital, Stourbridge (60 Bradley Road, DY8 1UX · 01384 500 806) is the Black Country’s newest Ramsay site; searchers call it Ramsay Stourside, and some arrive looking for “West Midlands Hospital Stourside”, which is the Halesowen sister hospital it works alongside. It is a day-case hospital: cataract surgery, hernia repair, varicose vein treatment, spinal and joint injections, carpal tunnel and hand surgery, gynaecology day procedures, urology including Rezum and circumcision, ENT, oral surgery and physiotherapy, with X-ray, ultrasound and endoscopy on site. Overnight surgery and MRI and CT scanning are at West Midlands Hospital.

Three ways in: pay yourself (Ramsay’s guide prices are below, from £525 for a scan to £4,294 for laser treatment of both legs), use health insurance if Stourside is on your policy’s hospital list, or choose it through an NHS referral at no cost, which is how about 92% of its patients arrive. For how NHS waits compare, see our NHS waiting times hub and waiting times by region.

Three Ways to Be Treated at Stourside

  • Self-pay. Book a consultation, get a written quote and pay the guide price, usually within weeks. Finance is available, including 0% over 10 months with no deposit.
  • Health insurance. Your insurer pays if Stourside is on your policy’s hospital list and you get pre-authorisation before booking; Ramsay runs a simplified referral process for insured patients.
  • NHS referral. Stourside treats NHS patients who choose it through their GP referral: in 2023/24, 3,037 of its 3,315 admissions were NHS-funded. It is free, but you join the NHS waiting list for the hospital. See how to be seen faster on the NHS, NHS cataract waits, NHS wisdom teeth waits and how to get a private referral.

What Stourside Hospital Treats: Services Offered

Stourside does not have an A&E department; Russells Hall Hospital in Dudley does. For anything Stourside does not list, Nuffield Health Wolverhampton and the hospitals in our private hospitals in Birmingham guide are the alternatives.

CQC Rating, Reviews and History

The Care Quality Commission rates Stourside Hospital Good overall, and Good in all five areas (safe, effective, caring, responsive and well-led), after an inspection on 14 June 2022 with the report published on 19 August 2022; a CQC review on 6 July 2023 found no reason to change the rating, and Ramsay’s quality account records it keeping Good across all five domains in October 2023. That is the latest published rating, so check the CQC website for anything more recent before you book. The registered provider is Ramsay Health Care UK Operations Limited. Stourside opened in 2021 as a brand-new day-case facility for NHS and private patients, built as an extension of West Midlands Hospital in Halesowen, with which it shares a hospital director and a quality account; in 2023/24 the two sites recorded about 92% NHS activity at Stourside. PHIN’s profile reports 97% of 1,676 patients rating their experience very good or good. Patient reviews and photos of Stourside Hospital on Google, iWantGreatCare and the NHS website give a more personal picture of the unit and the consultants; our guide to choosing a private consultant explains how to check any surgeon’s record. For jobs at the hospital, Ramsay advertises on its careers site rather than through reception.

What is Stourside Hospital’s CQC rating?

That is the latest published rating. The registered provider is Ramsay Health Care UK Operations Limited.

Is Stourside Hospital a day-case hospital, and where does overnight surgery happen?

Yes. Stourside opened in 2021 as a purpose-built, single-storey day-case hospital with an ambulatory unit of day pods, one laminar-airflow theatre and outpatient and physiotherapy rooms, and no overnight beds. It runs as an extension of West Midlands Hospital in Halesowen, which has the MRI and CT scanners and the in-patient wards, so a hip or knee replacement listed on Stourside’s pages is usually consulted on at Stourside and carried out at West Midlands Hospital; ask which site when you book.

Can NHS patients be treated at Stourside Hospital?

Yes, and most of its patients are NHS patients: in 2023/24 Ramsay’s quality account recorded 3,315 admissions, of which 3,037, about 92%, were NHS-funded and 278 were private (162 insured and 116 self-pay). If your GP refers you for an eligible day-case procedure, you can choose Stourside at no cost, although you join the NHS waiting list for the hospital rather than the self-pay timetable.

What does Stourside Hospital treat?

Ramsay lists cardiology, ENT including children’s grommets, general surgery (hernias, gallbladder, haemorrhoids, pilonidal sinus, skin lesions), gynaecology (hysteroscopy, endometrial ablation, colposcopy, sterilisation), ophthalmology including cataract surgery, orthopaedics (carpal tunnel, trigger finger, Dupuytren’s, bunions, knee arthroscopy, ACL, shoulder), pain management including facet joint, epidural and cortisone injections, physiotherapy, urology including Rezum, Aquablation, TURP, vasectomy and circumcision, oral surgery and varicose vein treatment, with C-arm X-ray, ultrasound and endoscopy on site. It does not have an A&E department.

What are the visiting times and parking arrangements at Stourside?

As a day-case hospital, Stourside does not publish visiting hours; patients are usually collected the same day, and someone must drive you home after an anaesthetic. Parking is free, with 73 spaces including six disabled bays, and the entrance is step-free with automatic doors, a hearing loop and BSL interpreters on request.

Does Stourside Hospital accept health insurance?

Yes. Ramsay hospitals are recognised by Bupa, AXA Health, Aviva, Vitality, WPA and the other major UK insurers, and Ramsay describes a simplified referral process for insured patients, but whether Stourside is on your policy depends on your hospital list, and you need pre-authorisation from your insurer before booking. Health insurance covers new conditions that start after you join; existing ones are usually excluded.
